The Institute is one of the oldest IP organisations in the world, being founded in 1882 and incorporated by Royal Charter in 1891. Our Presidents used to serve a term of two years. This changed to a one-year presidency in 1923 and has remained this way ever since. Our President chairs Council and represents the Institute at important events and policy meetings domestically and overseas. The President is supported by a Vice-President who succeeds them at the end of their term, the Immediate Past President, and our Honorary Secretary. These are known as the Officers of the Institute.
