AI guidance for SMEs and creators

News

4 December 2025

AI tools are becoming popular for helping with research and drafting documents, and they can save time for inventors and businesses.

However, using generative AI carelessly can put your ideas and future patent rights at serious risk. Many inventors are now submitting patent applications that include AI-generated text, but mistakes or hidden disclosures in this content can make an invention impossible to patent later.

A key danger is confidentiality: if you type details of your new idea into an AI tool that is not fully secure, it may count as sharing the invention publicly. In the UK and Europe, this can mean you lose the right to patent it altogether.

To stay safe, avoid entering invention details into AI tools unless confidentiality is guaranteed, double-check any AI-generated text, and work with a qualified patent attorney. Businesses should also set clear AI policies, use secure tools, and keep up to date with official guidance.
