In a joint CIPA and Licensing Executives Society (LES) webinar Samantha Williams and Claudia Duffy will each present their thoughts on what leads to a successful university spin-out offering practical advice on how the interests and expectations of the parties can be accommodated. With Graham Johnson moderating they will then discuss some of the issues that may have been holding back successful commercialisation of IP and how those might be overcome.

After spending 10 years as a Research Scientist in Munich and Cambridge, Claudia entered the patent profession in 2008 and held both in-house (for two Cambridge University spinouts) and private practice roles (in London, Cambridge and Edinburgh) before becoming an IP Entrepreneur in 2019. She is the Founder of Innovare IP, a full-service legal practice, and IP Bloks, a LegalTech venture.
Claudia also spent one year working in university research commercialisation in Scotland, engaging directly with the Scottish Microelectronics Centre at the University of Edinburgh.
She is the Chair of CIPA’s IP Commercialisation Committee and Vice-Chair of epi’s IP Awareness Working Group.  She is also a Member of the UKIPO’s IP Finance Advisory Group, CIPA’s Public Affairs Committe  and epi’s IP Commercialisation Committee, as well as a Professional Member of the Economy and Enterprise Committee of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Dr Samantha Williams has a D.Phil. in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford and then worked in industry as a research scientist with Unilever Research in the United Kingdom. She then joined the Medical Research Council’s Technology Transfer Group based in London and continued to pursue a career in technology transfer, with over 20 years’ experience in both the UK and Ireland in the successful commercialisation of intellectual property arising in the academic sector. She has been Licensing Manager at Trinity College Dublin, since 2017 and is responsible for Trinity’s Intellectual Property licence agreements to established companies and to new Trinity spin-out companies. She is also currently Chair of the Irish Chapter of LES Britain & Ireland and a Director of LES Britain & Ireland Ltd.
